On Saturday the 30th of October 1999, the
President of Ireland Mrs. Mary McAleese accompanied
by her husband Dr. Martin McAleese stayed
with us here at Glenlo Abbey Hotel. To commemorate
the visit to Glenlo Abbey Hotel, President
Mary McAleese was presented with a book of
poetry by Mr.John F Bourke.
The President was visiting Galway to give
a speech at a Gala Banquet Celebrating 150
years of The National University of Galway.

Mary McAleese, inaugurated as the eighth
President of Ireland in November1997, is the
first person from Ulster to be elected Head
of State.
President McAleese has a distinguished background
in higher education, the law and in broadcasting.
After graduating from Queens University Belfast
she was called to the Northern Ireland Bar
and practiced mainly in criminal and family
law. She subsequently held a series of academic
appointments, North and South, as well as
becoming a respected current affairs broadcaster
with RTE.
In 1994 she was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor
of Queenss University Belfast, the first
woman to hold this position at the University.
She has held many company directorships, chaired
numerous government committees and has been
involved in inter-church affairs and anti-sectarian
causes. She has been a tireless campaigner
against social injustice in areas such as
housing, womens rights, homelessness
and prisoners rights |
